WILLIAMS, Arizona – Williams gardeners interested in meeting other local gardeners and exchanging seeds gathered for a “seed exchange” on September 21 at the Williams Public Library.
The seed exchange takes place periodically at the library, according to Williams resident Charlene Karon.
“Usually the seed exchange is huge, but it all has to start somewhere,” she said.
Karon, along with Williams librarian Mary Corcoran, helped bring the seed exchange to the library.
“We used to set up seed libraries in Phoenix and we came up with the idea of integrating it into that library,” Karon said.
The idea behind the seed exchange is to give gardeners the opportunity to meet and share their unused seeds for others to use.
“People donate – they bring it in and we bag it and put it in the seed library,” Karon said.
Karon said she enjoys it because it allows her to meet other people who have similar interests.
“I have a passion for it. I worked with Native Seed Search in Tucson, ”she said. “You get to know people – you have something in common with them. The seed catalog is at your disposal. (You can talk about) what is working in the region and what is not working in the region.
Karon said the seed exchange is planning to meet again this spring.
“We’ll have another one in January or March, when the seeds are really needed,” she said. “Anyone can collect and donate which is good. “
