Students, staff and community members celebrated Willits High School (WHS) homecoming with a lively nighttime rally, college and junior college football and dance matches. The beloved American tradition was observed from September 27 to October 2.

The September 29 nighttime rally, hosted by Tiana Dalton and Kayla Jimenez, put the spotlight on senior athletes and showcased this year’s short Homecoming in what Jimenez described as “the moment you’ve all been waiting for.” Seniors Lily Barrett and Marcos Chavoya have been crowned queen and reunion king. Senior finalists included; Kasey Adams, Tiana Dalton, Justin Johnson and Eric Rodriguez. Aliyah Amador and Jadyn Arnold were princess and prince junior. Maci Yokum and Braden Manus were second year princess and prince. Valerie Smith and Caleb Luna were first year princess and prince.

WHS professor David Lilker has been announced as Grand Marshal. Dalton said: “We chose him to be Grand Marshal because he has always been known as a respectable and funny teacher, he is also retiring after this year and will be sadly missed.” Deputy Director Marian Lohne was announced as the Athletes’ Choice. Jimenez explained: “She has always been one of our strongest supporters of WHS sports teams.”

The coaches introduced the senior athletes of the volleyball, women’s and men’s soccer, football and cross-country teams. The coaches expressed their pride in their teams. Much to the amusement of the crowd, the sports teams performed dances on the soccer field, flaunting their abilities outside of the sports in which they participate.

The teachers at WHS provided comedic relief with a skit, “The Second-String Spirit Squad,” which included plenty of silly and energetic cheers.

A minute of silence was observed for Victoria Stewart as the nightly rally marked the third anniversary of her death. The soccer team and cheerleaders released balloons in her honor as the students said, “We love you! It was an emotional moment as the balloons flew through the sky and the crowd remembered Stewart.

Stewart was killed in a horrific head-on accident north of Willits in the fall of 2018.

The students had a Spirit Week where the students dressed daily to display their Wolverine pride. Monday classes wore thematic colors by year (Freshman wore yellow, sophomores wore green, juniors wore pink, and seniors wore purple), Tuesday was Yeehaw vs. Hippie, Wednesday was Disney Day, Thursday was Twin Day and Friday was Green and Gold Day.

The homecoming wouldn’t be complete without Friday night’s football, which coincidentally was the first home game of the season for the Wolverines. Junior Varsity took another victory with the score of 40-0. The varsity team earned their first victory of the season with a score of 24-7 against Cloverdale High School.

At halftime, the reunion tribunal paraded around the field in an impressive display of cars and trucks, followed by thematic floats designed and built by each class.

This year’s theme was Disney Princess with the seniors taking on the Tangled movie, the juniors had the sleeping beauty, the sophomores had the princess and the frog, and the freshmen had the beauty and the beast.

Reunion concluded with a student dance Saturday evening October 2 outside in the school quads area.
