MADISON, Wisconsin (WBAY) – The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) reports that the 7-day average of coronavirus cases has increased again from 1,021 to 1,087 new cases per day. Since the state’s last report last Friday, DHS says an additional 2,289 people have tested positive for the virus, which causes COVID-19. Our records show that DHS has not reported more than 2,000 new cases in a single report since January 22. Keep in mind that the agency does not provide COVID-19 updates on weekends and the cases come from three days of testing.
Meanwhile, the state’s positivity rate – the percentage of all tests that come back positive – has held steady at 7.4%. Since Wisconsin’s first patient was hospitalized with COVID-19 more than a year and a half ago, the state has seen 630,296 confirmed cases.
The state continues to kill an average of 1 death per day from COVID-19. DHS on Monday raised the death toll from six to 7,454. After holding steady at 1.19% for seven days, the state’s death rate fell to 1.18% on Monday. This rate is for all known cases. Of the six COVID-19 deaths reported by DHS on Monday, one was recorded in Dodge County. No COVID-19 related deaths have been reported to the state in the past 30 days.
As of Friday, the state has reported 116 more hospitalizations for COVID-19 treatment, the same number reported last week on Tuesday. We calculate that the state has an average of 66 COVID-19 hospitalizations per day, and that 5.36% of all coronavirus cases in the past year and a half resulted in hospitalization – which equates to 33,787 people. Most have recovered, but some are so called “long haul” who have lingering effects from their infection, ranging from chronic headaches to breathing problems to “brain fog”.
When you factor in discharges and deaths with the new admissions, there have been 481 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in the state, 63 more than Friday’s report from the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA), and 160 of these patients are in intensive care, 20 more than the previous report.
Hospitals in the Northeast Health Region treat 39 patients, 15 of whom are in intensive care. That’s 1 more in intensive care and one less patient overall since Friday. Fox Valley hospitals were treating 25 patients – an increase of five from Friday – including 7 in intensive care, an increase of three since that last report.
The CDC says the delta variant is more contagious than the original COVID-19 virus. CDC revised masking guidelines after discovering vaccinated people infected with the delta variant can carry the same viral load like the unvaccinated and pass it on to others, but the vaccinated are less likely to require hospitalization even if they get sick.
Vaccination
The state reports that an additional 13,899 Wisconsinites reported receiving a dose on Monday and 6,296 are now considered fully immunized.
According to our calculations, an average of 5,767 Wisconsin residents began their immunizations each day for the past 7 days, and an average of 2,818 people were fully immunized.
DHS reports that 52.7% of the state’s entire population has received at least one dose of the vaccine, including 49.8% of the fully vaccinated population. Not counting children – who up to the age of 12 are not eligible for the vaccine – 63.6% of Wisconsin’s adult population are vaccinated, of which 60.3% receive their full dose.
Outagamie County could see 50% of its population fully vaccinated at some point this week – it is currently at 49.8%, according to state health officials. Dodge County now has 40.0% of its population vaccinated against COVID-19, according to DHS.

The fair clinic will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the end of the fair on August 15. To incentivize COVID-19 vaccination, the state is offering free cream puffs at the Wisconsin State Fair to anyone who gets the Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson at a West Allis Fair clinic .
Outagamie County Public Health and the Wisconsin National Guard have teamed up to create a COVID-19 vaccination clinic inside the Fox River Mall. The walk-in clinic near Scheels will operate on select dates until September 2, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Outagamie County Website.

* The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Wisconsin Hospital Association do not issue updates on weekends. The Michigan Department of Health only updates the information on Tuesdays and Fridays.
** Cases and deaths are from state COVID-19 reports, which may differ from local health department numbers. The Wisconsin DHS reports cases of all health departments within a county, including tribal, municipal, and county health departments; county websites cannot. Additionally, public health departments update their data at different times, while DHS freezes the numbers it receives at the same time each day to compile the afternoon report.
