Wisconsin has an average of 1,000 coronavirus cases per day

MADISON, WB (WBAY) – For the first time since early February, Wisconsin is recording an average of 1,000 new cases of coronavirus per day, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Service’s 7-day average. This moving average is up from 902 the day before. The state says the latest test results have confirmed 1,573 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

The percentage of tests that came back positive over the past week jumped to a 7.6% positivity rate. A state update says the positivity rate a day earlier was 7.8%, the highest positivity rate since mid-January, when cases were on the decline. The state says this moving average should be considered preliminary.

Like we reported wednesday, the Department of Health Services (DHS) said transmission of COVID-19 is high in 71 of 72 counties and very high in Milwaukee County. This is based on the rate of positive tests per 100,000 people over the past two weeks (the burden) and the percentage change in cases over the past week (the trajectory). There are no countries where the spread of the COVID-19 virus is low or moderate.

State says about 192 out of 100,000 people in Wisconsin were diagnosed with COVID-19 between July 21 and August 3.

Since the first case was confirmed in Wisconsin 18 months ago today, the state has recorded 626,880 cases. State figures show that 1.19% of these cases were fatal (for comparison, the World Health Organization estimates the death rate for influenza to be 0.1%).

DHS reports a death toll of 7,453 over 18 months. That’s 3 more added since Wednesday. DHS says these 3 deaths occurred within the past 30 days. Wisconsin has recorded an average of 2 deaths from COVID-19 per day over the past week. No additional deaths were reported in the WBAY observation area.

Health officials say the death rate remains low largely due to vaccination efforts targeting the elderly. As of Thursday, 84% of Wisconsinians 65 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 81.8% are fully immunized.

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene reports that the delta variant accounts for 90% of samples tested last week, up from 83% the week before and 75% the week before. The delta variant is known to be more contagious than the original COVID-19 virus and is more likely to cause severe symptoms, especially in the unvaccinated.

The state reports that 49.6% of Wisconsinites are fully vaccinated, or 2,886,592 people. That’s about 52.4% of the population, or 3,049,492 people, who have received at least one dose since COVID-19 vaccines became available on December 13. These percentages include children under 12 who are not yet eligible for any vaccines and must rely on the people vaccinated around them and mitigating factors to stay protected. At just 18 and over, 60.2% of adults in Wisconsin are fully immunized, out of 63.2% who have received at least one dose.

Vaccinators reported that an additional 7,105 people who had not previously received a dose of vaccine had been vaccinated since Wednesday’s update. This is almost double the 3,540 immunization rounds that have been completed since the last report.

DHS figures show 83 more people have been hospitalized for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, more than our calculated average of 57 admissions per day. Thursday the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) has reported 388 COVID-19 patients, including 117 in intensive care, in state hospitals. That’s 3 more in intensive care and 35 more patients in the past 24 hours after accounting for discharges and deaths.

WHA reports 25 COVID-19 patients in hospitals in Northeast region, including 8 in intensive care; it is 1 less patient in intensive care and 1 less patient overall. Fox Valley area hospitals are taking 11 patients, the same as Wednesday, with 4 in intensive care, an increase of 1.

Since the start of the pandemic, 33,589 people have been hospitalized in the state for treatment for COVID-19, or 5.36% of all confirmed cases.
