90-year-old woman infected with two variants at the same time

Belgian researchers have confirmed that a 90-year-old woman was infected with two variants of COVID-19 at the same time before her death.

A respiratory sample showed the woman had been infected with the Alpha variant discovered in the UK and the Beta variant discovered in South Africa. Her case is the first documented case of a person infected with two variants simultaneously, researchers said during a presentation at the European Congress on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

The woman was hospitalized on March 3 after a series of falls, and she tested positive for COVID-19 the same day. She quickly developed respiratory symptoms and died five days later.

The woman had an “unremarkable” medical history before she was admitted to hospital, the researchers said. She lived alone and had not received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Study Finds U.S. Vaccine Deployment Saved 279,000 Lives

A study by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health concluded that COVID-19 vaccines saved 279,000 lives and prevented 1.25 million hospitalizations in the United States

The researchers came to their conclusions by comparing the vaccine deployment data to a pair of hypothetical scenarios: one in which no vaccine was given and one in which only half of the vaccines were given.

If only half the number of vaccines had been administered, there would have been 120,000 additional deaths and 450,000 additional hospitalizations, the study concluded.

The United States had administered more than 334 million vaccines as of Monday, and more than 55% of the population has received at least one dose, according to data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

OSU Study Finds One-Third of Young People Report Worse Mental Health During Pandemic

Researchers at Ohio State University and Kenyon College have found that about a third of teens and young adults have reported deteriorating mental health during the coronavirus pandemic.

The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, involved 571 participants who provided feedback from March 2020 to May 2020.

A third of participants reported worse mood or more anxiety during the pandemic. The effects were more pronounced among people with higher socioeconomic status, those who weren’t as close to family or friends, or those who were older, according to the study.
