Woman dies after receiving COVID-19 vaccine at Cal Poly Pomona; no connection with the suspected shooting

POMONA, Calif. (KABC) – A 78-year-old woman has died after receiving the Pfizer vaccine at Cal Poly Pomona, but her death is not linked to the shooting, officials say.

The woman received the gunshot Friday afternoon and was observed when she began to complain of discomfort and loss of consciousness, according to a statement from Dr Michael E. Morris, physician director of the COVID-vaccination program. 19 from Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, which manages the place.

Paramedics on site helped the woman “but she could not be resuscitated in the end.”

“Her cause of death has not been determined; however, there were no signs or symptoms of a severe allergic or anaphylactic reaction,” Morris said in the statement.

The woman’s family say she had a history of heart disease. Her 57-year-old husband has also received the vaccine and is still urging people to get the vaccine, adding that he intends to receive his second dose in a few weeks.

Kaiser says the site will remain open and vaccinations will continue as long as supplies are available.

“On behalf of everyone involved in the vaccination site, run by Kaiser Permanente, we extend our sincere and sincere condolences to his family,” Morris said.
