A 25-year-old North Carolina-based woman said she was rushed to hospital after denim shorts caused her to develop cellulitis and sepsis, a potentially fatal infection.

Sam told BuzzFeed that she felt uncomfortable in the shorts she wore on a date, but decided to ignore it. She said she started to feel sick the next day.

“I was in a lot of pain and then I started to feel bad – but not 100%,” Sam told BuzzFeed. “That night I noticed I had a big lump where the rubbing had occurred, and over time it started to get more painful. The pain was isolated in one place and it was was like a throbbing, stabbing pain. “

Two days later, Sam said she was sent to the emergency room after having the area checked by her doctor.

Sam said she developed cellulitis, a bacterial infection of the skin that causes swelling, pain and can be fatal if left untreated. The cellulitis had progressed to septic shock, which occurs after the body has an extreme reaction to the infection and can lead to permanent tissue damage and organ failure.

“I was shaking, very short of breath, couldn’t walk and had extreme body aches,” Sam said. “They admitted me to the ICU, and that’s when I realized that it was a little more serious than I had expected. “

Sam said doctors had considered removing the infected part of her buttocks during a debridement operation, but decided to wait a few days to see if she could fight off the infection without the procedure. Fortunately, Sam was able to recover after four days in intensive care with the help of antibiotics.

Sam shared his story on TikTok to warn people about the dangers of ignoring uncomfortable wedgies and got over 1.3 million likes. Sam told BuzzFeed that many commentators have said this has happened to them as well.

Despite the embarrassing end to their date, Sam said she and her boyfriend were still together three years after the friction incident.
