It was the pandemic’s highest-grossing theatrical release following its Christmas Day debut.

And it turns out that Warner Bros.’s decision to create Wonder Woman 1984 on the WarnerMedia HBO Max subscription streaming service at the same time as in theaters paid off.

Parent company AT&T revealed on Wednesday that as a result, 17.7 million activated users had been added to HBO Max by the end of December.

This number was double the number he had at the end of September.

AT&T CEO John Stankey shared the news of the success during a fourth quarter earnings call.

“The release of Wonder Woman 1984 helped bring our national HBO Max and HBO subscribers to over 41 million, two years faster than our initial forecast,” Stankey said, as reported by THR.com.

Just two days after the film’s release, Warner Bros. announced it would be quick: a third film in the franchise with Gadot reprising her role as Diana Prince and Patty Jenkins returning as screenwriter and director.

The success of Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and streaming will boost confidence in the company’s controversial decision to hybridize its entire 2021 film lineup.

The first combined theatrical and streaming movies are expected to further increase activations.

“Activations” count the number of people who download (activate) the HBO Max app.

THR.com reports that the company hopes to reach 50 to 55 million HBO Max customers in the United States by 2025.

WarnerMedia also plans to launch an ad version of HBO Max in the second quarter of the year and begin rolling out the streaming service internationally.
