CHARLESTON – Active coronavirus cases in Wood County increased by more than 13% between the pandemic report Friday and Monday from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state has also reported 10,543 active cases, about double from two weeks ago and up from 8,806 cases reported in the previous update on Friday, according to state statistics.
The number of active cases in Wood County was 443 on Monday, an increase of 53 from Friday’s report, the state said. The number in Wood County increased to 42 from Thursday to Friday, from 348 to 390.
Jackson County saw a 50 percent increase in the ratio from Friday to Monday, from 54 Friday to 80 Monday. Wetzel County jumped 30 cases, from 215 in Friday’s report to 245 in Monday’s report.
Hospitalizations of patients with complications from COVID-19 were 447 on Monday, up from 428 on Friday, with 143 in an intensive care unit, up from 131 on Friday, and 57 on ventilators, up from 49 on Friday.
Wood County also remained red on the County Alert System map, the highest level based on infection rate and percent positivity, twenty-three counties are red including Wetzel counties , Jackson and Roane.
Tyler, Pleasants, Ritchie and Wirt counties are orange, second higher on the map. Doddridge is gold, intermediate level. Cvalhou and Gilmer counties are yellow in the second lowest position on the map.
No county is green, the lowest level on the map.
Eight deaths have been reported since the last[date on Friday. The state confirmed the deaths of a 49-year-old woman from Wayne County, a 67-year-old woman from Putnam County, a 68-year-old man from Upshur County, a 70-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 53-year old male from Preston County, an 88-year old male from Lincoln County, an 84-year old female from Logan County, and a 62-year old female from Logan County.
“We send our sympathy to these families and urge all West Virginians to continue following the guidelines to protect one another,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. “If you or a family member are over the age of 12 and have not yet received a COVID vaccine, please schedule one today.”
The death toll was at 3,016 as of Monday.
