Woodhaven 2021 football season preview – The News Herald

Like all other teams in the state, Woodhaven faced the uncertainty and frustration that existed last fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But even with a delayed start and then a loss in Week 1, 2020 has proven to be another impressive season for the program.

The Warriors finished 7-2 (5-1 DRL) and reached the third round of the playoffs. It was the fifth consecutive year with at least seven wins and the program has only seen one losing season since 2014.

To start the year, Woodhaven fell to downriver League rival Wyandotte Roosevelt. From that point on, the team have won their next seven games and have allowed just 32 total points in that streak.

The Warriors dominated Taylor High in the first round of the playoffs and overtook Dearborn High in the next round. Woodhaven gave perennial state power Detroit Cass Tech a battle early in the District’s final game before seeing their year come to an end.

Back at the helm this fall, Keith Christnagel is in his 21st season as head coach of the Violet et Blanc.

He has a roster that includes several returning players from last season, as well as some new faces.

Senior Cornell Perry, who signed up for Syracuse, will line up in the slots again this year. He finished last year with 190 receiving yards, 156 rushing yards and four total touchdowns, although he missed some time with injury. In defense, he will be in high school after a junior campaign that included 38 tackles and two interceptions.

Starting off the wide receiver, senior Darion Nundley and fellow senior Dorian Davis will play the running back. On the other side of the ball, the two players will serve as defensive backs.

Seniors Andrew Ewald and Jaxson Ferguson will also serve as receivers and on the defense will both be in high school.

Senior Ashton Mohlman will kick the ball, as he returns to the quarterback role after a strong junior season.

Junior running backs Devin Henry and Nathan Blaszczak and senior back Eion Evans are also expected to contribute heavily. Defensively, Evans will serve as linebacker for the Warriors.

Senior Chris Banks is ready to play the tight end and in defense he will play linebacker.

Up front on the offensive line there will be seniors Adam Kolodziejczyk and Matt Pabian and junior Isaac Perez. The three players will move to the defensive line and will be joined there by senior Jordan Wilkerson.

Woodhaven will kick off 2021 with a Downriver League match at Taylor High on Friday, August 27 at 7 p.m. ET. In Week 2, the Warriors travel to Lincoln Park on Thursday, September 2 for a 7 p.m. clash with the Railsplitters.
