WORCESTER, Mass .– Starting Monday, Worcester demands that people hide inside. New England’s second-largest city resets warrant after experiencing a further rise in COVID cases.

According to health officials, the rate of positivity testing here has increased tenfold since June. And that’s one of the reasons people will have to wear masks indoors starting Monday.

“We have to do what we have to do at this point, because it’s the people who don’t want to be vaccinated or who cannot get the vaccine that it starts to affect them. Especially the little children who are sadly helpless at this time and this situation, ”said Amanda Ventura.

The mandate of Worcester Indoor Masks includes all indoor private common areas, from grocery stores to private businesses and even the Polar Park suites. Just last week, the city had more than 500 cases.

“I think it’s a downside, but I think it’s a downside that I can live with when I think about the impact it might have on the community,” Ismael Rivera said.

Health officials say there are currently 70 patients across the city waiting for beds because hospitals are full. Some folks the Boston 25 News spoke with aren’t happy about having to cover up again, but understand why the city is demanding it.

“You have to do what you have to do. You want to do your part, ”said Adam Sarnik. “Getting vaccinated is important. Wearing your mask is important. This is the only thing we can do at this point. This is the only option we have.

“I’m not happy, I mean we have to do what we have to do. I would like people to get vaccinated, and that wouldn’t be a problem, ”said Jeremy Burque.

According to official figures, 52% of Worcester residents are vaccinated, with around 60% receiving at least one injection. That’s below the state average of 67%. In addition to the mask’s mandate, Worcester is demanding that all city workers be fully immunized by November 1 or do weekly tests.
