Dr Robert Redfield, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, predicted that fall will have a dark turn in the coronavirus pandemic.
Redfield told Fox News Channel’s “The Story”“ that he believes the coronavirus will continue to replicate rapidly in humans, and therefore the risk of variant development is high.
“You know we dealt with the British variant; everyone thought it was bad enough, it was twice as contagious, but lo and behold, three, four months later we had the delta variant and now it’s a dominant variant in the United States ”, a Redfield said.
He then predicted that there would be another more dangerous coronavirus variant by the fall.
“In two, three, four months we will have another variant and this variant will be more contagious than the delta variant,” said Redfield.
Redfield said the coronavirus has become one of the most infectious viruses in humans, which has allowed it to mutate faster.
Redfield’s comments come as other experts have warned of potential new variants that may appear in the future. A large number of scientists recently told Newsweek that there is a potential for a variant that cannot be stopped by vaccines.
Dr Anthony Fauci, White House medical adviser for the novel coronavirus, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the unvaccinated population could spread the virus to such an extent that there will be time for the virus to mutate.
“So if you allow the virus to circulate freely and don’t try to stop it, sooner or later there is a likelihood that you will get another variant that could, I’m not saying it will, which could be more problematic than the delta, ”Fauci said.
In fact, Fauci said the virus could become so dangerous that it would have the power to evade vaccines, infecting thousands of people who, at the moment, are immune to variants.
“If you give the virus the chance to keep changing, you lead to a vulnerability that we could get a worse variant,” he said. “And then it will have an impact not only on the unvaccinated; this will have an impact on the vaccinees because this variant could escape the protection of the vaccine. “
