– Victor Smith, 91, was in an Ohio rehab clinic when his appointment for a second coronavirus vaccine came on January 25. He was taken to a county site and returned, Live Science reports. “When he came back I spoke to him, he was good,” said his daughter, Dawn Smith Theodore. It was also the day of the vaccination at the rehabilitation center, and a firefighter showed up a little later and said he had a dose for Victor. “The nurse said ‘Victor Smith?’ and he said, “Yes”, so they gave him the room number, “his daughter said. But the dose was supposed to go to another Victor at the clinic, according to WGCL. “I got two shots,” Smith told his daughter. After the second stroke, Smith’s blood pressure dropped and he went into shock. “They pretty much told me he wasn’t going to make it,” Theodore said.
But his father recovered. Smith had had his first stroke three days earlier; doses are meant to be given weeks apart. The city of Hamilton said the rehabilitation center and the fire department, which handles vaccinations at the clinic, are investigating, according to WLWT. No one said what brand of vaccine Smith received. In Australia, two patients, aged 88 and 94, received up to four times the recommended dose of Pfizer vaccine last month, according to ABC. They also recovered. Experts attributed the error to the multidose vial vaccine; Australian healthcare professionals are familiar with single-dose container vaccines.
