WV MetroNews Jamie Dixon of TCU impressed by McCabe's escape party

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – You can not blame anyone who does not expect the Jordan McCabe Show to start at the WVU Coliseum on Tuesday night. Of course, the first-year playmaker had just finished a career at Baylor, but that 14-point effort was the only time in his college career that he had doubled his numbers.

Jamie Dixon, coach of the TCU, was not, however, totally shocked by McCabe's performance with 25 points, 11 assists, six steals and five rebounds at the expense of his team. This assessment is not based on what happened this season, however.

"We saw him make some moves," Dixon said. "And I saw him play in high school. Then I knew that he could do it. "

McCabe was a four-star point guard with an average of 26.7 points per game at his Wisconsin high school. He entered Tuesday's game with 28.3% on three points in college.

"We talked about removing the 3 and keeping it in front," Dixon said. "We certainly have not done a very good job on this."

What had happened was …

TCU had the ball in obvious position to take the last shot of the game on two different occasions – and did not end up shooting.

At the end of regulation time, Dixon put a timeout of 11.5 seconds to set up the final game. McCabe thwarted the plan by snatching Desmond Bane's ball from the Frogs near the center of the field before narrowly missing him on his own desperate uprising.

"We obviously have not performed," Dixon said. "It could be on me. We played a game a little different from what we practiced. Of course, our staff was different too, so I thought it was the easiest way to do it. I just thought we did not read well.

The Frogs seemed to have the Mountaineers dead at the end of the second overtime when Bane faced the ball against Derek Culver while West Virginia missed his shot at the last shot with 5 seconds to go.

Instead, a perfect pass was lost when striker JD Miller dribbled improbably out of bounds midway through the field.

"We got what we wanted, knowing we had five seconds in a similar situation earlier in the year," Dixon said.

In the previous case, Miller made his way to court and beat a drummer who beat Oklahoma State on Feb. 6.

Triple take

Tuesday marked the first match in triple overtime West Virginia since February 12, 2010 in Pitt.

The opposing coach in this game?

Jamie Dixon.

Dixon had no memory of it in the aftermath of Tuesday's defeat, so for all who need a reminder: the Panthers thwarted the no. Five climbers 98-95 at the Petersen Events Center despite De'Sean Butler's 32 points.

Triple-OT Story

With this win, West Virginia has improved to 2-4 all-time in triple overtime games.

The previous victory game against someone who knows three or three things about triples – Dell Curry.

WVU defeated Curry and Virginia Tech 90-86 on 2 February 1983 after 38 points from Greg Jones. Curry would continue his career as one of the NBA's first three-point snipers before creating a better one at Steph Curry.

On February 15, 1939, the first game of the triple game in West Virginia's history was a 46-43 win against Penn State.

Timmy Eads was selected as the next mountaineer on Tuesday.

Meet your new mountaineer

West Virginia introduced its new mascot during the final deadline set for regulation by the media. Timmy Eads will be the 66th Mountaineer in the school's history, taking the rifle from Trevor Kiess, a native of Elkins.
