CHARLESTON, W.Va. – US Senator Joe Manchin, D -W.Va., urges Amazon.com Inc. to install its second headquarters in West Virginia.
The letter to CEO Jeff Bezos came after the company announced Feb. 14 that it was canceling plans to build a second head office in Long Island City, New York.
"You once wrote that your philanthropy strategy was at the crossroads of urgent needs and lasting impact, and I am sure that this has influenced your search for a second seat, asking States think big and creatively for their proposals, "wrote Manchin a letter dated Friday.
"Unfortunately, the final decision lacked the foresight that marked your career. You now have another chance to have a lasting impact on not just a city, but an entire region. "
US Senator Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.Manchin's speech included mentioning the state's natural landscape, low cost of living, low crime rate, veteran population, and energy resources, which he said is "necessary for cloud computing ".
The senator also spoke about the business environment, which he related to the tax efforts deployed as governor.
"Over the past decade, our state has invested more than $ 15 billion in a wide range of sectors, with many global companies making the decision to locate and grow. in West Virginia, "he said.
Manchin highlighted the problems facing the Appalachian region, including the opioid crisis and the challenges of adapting to a modern economy.
"But these problems can be overcome and our small towns – many of which were once industrial powers – have incredible potential," he said.
Amazon has announced that it will continue to develop sites in Crystal City, outside Washington, DC, and Nashville. New York leaders have asked Bezos to reconsider his decision.
