After dominating his way to the Downriver League championship on Tuesday, Wyandotte Roosevelt won a regional title on Thursday.

Roosevelt finished with a total of 28 points in what was Division 2, Region 10 and punched his ticket to the state final. Gibraltar Carlson (19) took second place and also moved on to the States. The top two teams from each region, as well as the # 1 singles finalists, advance to the state competition.

Trenton (16) placed third and was followed by Temperance Bedford (10), Carleton Airport (9), Allen Park (8), Riverview Gabriel Richard, Ypsilanti Lincoln (3) and Lincoln Park (0).

Roosevelt won six of eight flying championships on a day of doubles matches in Carlson and singles matches in Riverview. Allen Park officially served as the regional host.

Overall, Roosevelt swept away the doubles and was victorious at No.3 and No.4 in singles.

The No. 3 singles champion was Jack Vaduva, as he beat Carlson’s Aden Brake by a score of 6-3, 6-3 in the final. In the semifinals, Vaduva dominated Nick Corona of Allen Park (6-1, 6-1) and Brake knocked down Luke Vallar of Trenton (6-3, 6-4).

Emmet Oswald of Roosevelt won fourth place in singles, which defeated Jay Cormier of Trenton (6-4, 6-0) in the championship game. Oswald qualified for the final with a semi-final victory over Connor Mulligan of Allen Park (6-1, 6-0). Cormier continued with a fierce semi-final victory over Carlson’s Landon Angelos (6-2, 4-6, 6-1).

Roosevelt’s Alex Moon and Cole Beaubien took first place in the No. 1 doubles by winning the final against Connor Mauritho and Daxton Lucidi of Trenton (6-1, 6-1). Moon and Beaubien reached the league game with a semi-final victory over Carlos Mandoza and Aiden Self (6-0, 6-4). Mauritho and Lucidi beat the Carlson duo of Mason Willis and Shivam Patel (6-2, 4-6, 6-2).

The No. 2 doubles championship went to Colton Winn and Tom Lipp of Roosevelt. The duo outscored Trenton’s Ian McFarland and Danny Nutter (6-4, 6-2) in the final. In the semifinals, Winn and Lipp beat Brady Pridgeon and J Rupli of Bedford (6-1, 6-1) while McFarland and Nutter beat Clayton Mays and Aiden Clearo of Airport (6-2, 6-2).

The Roosevelt duo of Josh Mills and Gavin Daum won the No. 3 doubles title. The pair won the final against Carlson’s Nick Riley and John Hojnowski (6-1, 6-4). Mills and Daum passed Steven Zanetti and Keegan Airgood of Trenton (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) in the semifinals while Riley and Hojnowski continued with a victory over Tyler Sype and Cody Sype of Airport (6- 1, 6 -1).

Aiden Kuzma and Daniel Hickey won the No. 4 doubles championship match against Sal Verduce and Braden Yurkunas of Trenton (3-6, 6-3, 6-3). Kuzma and Hickey and advanced to the semi-finals with a victory over Tyler Bunse and Miles Boroks of Allen Park (6-0, 6-0.) Verduce and Yurkunas outscored Carter Ryan and Taylor Burgermeister of Bedford (6- 2, 6-4) in the other semi-final.

In No. 1 singles, Carlson’s John Hesson was second, as he lost to Bedford’s Noah Kaplan (6-0, 6-3) in the final. Hesson eliminated Jace Bezeau from Airport (6-2, 6-4) in the semifinals. Kaplan defeated Roosevelt’s Hudson Hill (6-0, 6-3) in the semifinals and secured a berth in the state competition.

Carlson’s Jake Slezinger won the No. 2 singles championship with a final victory over Bedford’s Jaxson Nejeklik (6-2, 6-0) In the semifinals, Slezinger outscored Allen Park’s Trevor Stanley (6-0 , 6-0) while Nejeklik passed Sammy Oswald de Roosevelt (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) in a fierce battle.

The national D2 finals will take place October 15-16 in the Netherlands region.

In another regional action, Grosse-Île played host to D4, region 27 on Wednesday and finished fourth in the team with seven points.

Milan (14) and Jackson Lumen Christi (14) finished tied for total points and West Bloomfield Frankel Jewish Academy (12) was next. Brooklyn Columbia Central (3) and Plymouth Christian (2) also scored points while Robichaud, Monroe SMCC and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard also competed.

Anthony Naso of Grosse-Île was second for second in singles. He beat Brett Holmes of Plymouth Christian (6-0, 6-4) in the semifinals and lost to Milan’s Marco Killguss (6-2, 7-6) in the final.

The team reached the semi-finals in six other flights along the way: Calib Johnson (3 singles), Jack Calcut (4 singles), Ben Lazorka / Luke Hargrove (1 double), Harry Simmons / Trent Chlebek (2 doubles) ), Sul Cunningham / Nolan Kark (3 doubles) and Cam Finazzo / Seth Perko (4 doubles).

Southgate Anderson and Riverview traveled to Ann Arbor Greenhills on Wednesday for D3 action, Region 20. Anderson (3) tied for fourth on the team and Riverview (2) tied for sixth. Greenhills (21) won the championship and Country Day (19) was a finalist.

Anderson’s Kevin Lucas and Andrew Parkham (1 double) reached the semi-finals, as did Jacob Garner and Luke Piscitelli (2 doubles) and Josh Wright and Joshua Calhoun (3 doubles).

From Riverview, Luke Johnson (2 singles) and Tyler Costello (4 singles) both advanced to the semi-finals.

Woodhaven competed Thursday in D1, Region 2 at Ann Arbor Pioneer and walked away with no team points. The champion of the day was Pioneer (14) and AA Huron (12) finished second.
