GREEN RIVER, Wyo. (KIFI) – Brittney Montgomery, a first-grade teacher at Harrison Elementary School in Sweetwater County School District # 2 in Green River, was named Wyoming’s 2022 Teacher of the Year at Wednesday’s Wyoming Education Summit.

Montgomery is an advocate for his students and believes in the ability of each student to grow academically and socially, preparing students for success. Montgomery uses positive reinforcement, motivates and encourages students to become lifelong learners. She teaches students to take ownership of their learning and to defend their interests and those of their peers.

“I am so excited to be working with Brittney as Wyoming Teacher of the Year,” said State Superintendent of Education Jillian Balow. “Her skills and passion in the classroom and as a head teacher will represent Wyoming well. Brittany’s belief in teaching the whole child is evident – she has a positive impact on the students she teaches. As Teacher of the Year, her influence and impact will extend to her colleagues and others across the state and nation. ”

Every student Montgomery meets is treated as if they were their own child. When the school closed, Montgomery began reading stories online to help children maintain a sense of normalcy. It was quickly picked up by a local news source and “Story Time with Ms. Montgomery” was shared with thousands of children across the country.

“One of the things when I think of Brittney as an educator is her ability to connect with children and build relationships – it just puts her on top,” said Steven Lake, principal of the school. Harrison Primary, “The little things set her apart. During the pandemic, Brittney’s story hour turned into something that ended up impacting students across the county. She has such a positive energy that is contagious for staff and for students. ”

Montgomery said she wanted to help those who pursue a career in education. She works with new educators as a mentor-teacher and spends time helping university students who continue their studies in education. Montgomery is an active member of its school board and has served as secretary of the Green River Education Association.
