Xbox Smart Delivery dunks still on PS5 upgrade system – Destructoid

Xbox smart delivery wins

Like most, I completely took smart delivery for granted when it was first announced for the Xbox Series X / S line. Okay, so your console will know which version is best to run on your machine, and it will work. It’s standard, isn’t it? Wrong. Face to face, Xbox Smart Delivery wins by a mile.

As the owner of both the Xbox Series X and the PS5, I have been through several different scenarios with the latter. Again, on Xbox, if I have a game on Xbox One that is eligible for an upgrade, I install it on my Series X and it’s good. On PS5 there are additional steps to download different versions and to transfer save files for certain games which is also easier to do on the Xbox ecosystem.

Death stranding: Director’s Cup, which has just been released, is the most recent example. Therefore the Death stranding the upgrade (which costs $ 10 for existing PS4 owners) is actually a completely separate version of the game. It’s even listed next to the PS4 Deluxe Digital Edition on the storefront, but it’s a SKU different. Sony recently acknowledged this utter confusion in an official blog post, allowing Horizon forbidden to the west an exemption as a free upgrade. “Go forward”, however (including God of the war and Gran Turismo 7), you will have to shell out $ 10.

The digital-only PS5 SKU (which is one of the only options for some people) further complicates these matters, with additional terms for people with PS4 discs and a digital PS5. To be fair, that’s part of the deal you got to get a digital PS5. But at the same time, I don’t think a lot of people realized that buying used PS4 copies to get cheaper upgrades was a business strategy they would really have to worry about.

At this point, Sony seems to be moving forward with this system and the groundwork for smart delivery has already been laid. Hopefully Microsoft will continue on this path in the next generation. The jury is out on Sony.
