NEW YORK – (AP) – The Yankees put all-star infielder DJ LeMahieu on Sunday’s 10-day injured list with a sports hernia ahead of their scheduled regular-season final against the Tampa Bay Rays.
LeMahieu was taken out of New York’s game on Thursday in Toronto after six innings and has not played since. He’s been day to day, trying to make his way through training. While he still felt uncomfortable during baseball activities Sunday morning, the Yankees decided to put him away.
“At the end of the day, he’s too compromised to play now,” manager Aaron Boone said.
Rougned Odor started on third base in place of LeMahieu on Sunday, and Tyler Wade and Andrew Velazquez could also see the weather in the hot turn with LeMahieu absent.
Three-time Gold Glove winner and two-time batting champion, LeMahieu reached .268 with 10 home runs, 57 RBIs and a .711 OPS in 150 games. The hernia has been bothering him for at least ten days, and he has also suffered a persistent triceps injury this year.
New York recalled rookie right-hander Luis Gil in a corresponding move. The Yankees are also without 2020 home run champion Luke Voit, who competed in the IL on Thursday with an inflamed left knee.
The Yankees lost back-to-back games against the Rays and came in tied with Boston for the best Wild AL on Sunday. They would advance with a win, playing Fenway Park if the Red Sox also beat Washington on Sunday. If New York loses, it will at least find itself in one of the many tie-breaking scenarios on Monday also involving Toronto and Seattle, which are each one game away.
