The Yankees have been playing like shit over the past week, not winning a single baseball game since picking up an extra innings victory over a terrible Orioles team last Friday. Still, at that point, they were a game and a half above Boston in the Wild Card race, and six and a half ahead of Toronto, which trailed three other teams.
So much can change in a matter of days at this point in the season. If the Yankees lose tonight and the Blue Jays do what the Yankees were unable to do for most of last weekend (beat the Orioles), then the collapse will be complete. Their losing streak will reach seven games and they will be out of the playoffs for the first time since August 16, essentially reversing their 13-game winning streak. Unbelievable.
The only thing that stands in the way of this fate? Another team that can’t get by: the Mets. This Subway series is shaping up to be one of the least impressive games in its 24-year history. The Mets’ descent from the top of the NL East was longer than the Yankees collapse, but it may have been even more excruciating for their fans. The only teams they’ve consistently beaten since the trade deadline are the Nationals and Marlins, and even they fought back last week, each beating the Mets twice.
The Yankees should definitely send the Mets this weekend, but, well, they should have made it easy to the Orioles last weekend. So who knows what to expect? It’s up to Jordan Montgomery to keep the Mets’ sticks at bay while hoping his offense does something they haven’t been able to do most of the season and scores points for him.
Since this game is at Citi Field, there is no DH. So instead of Giancarlo Stanton or Luke Voit, we see the artistic styles of Jordan Montgomery on the flat. Delicious! At the same time, I don’t know why we bother with Gardner in the outfield and Stanton still on the bench. Aaron Boone noted that he will play tomorrow and Sunday, but a little urgency to break this terrible streak would be good. This high-end LeMahieu / Gardner is bad. (Please, Yankees. Don’t hesitate to prove this blogger wrong. I beg you.)
Good luck with the race support, Monty. Maybe I could try making a dinger yourself.
