The geyser remained inactive between 1911 and 1961, for example, before suddenly coming back to life.
And when it does, the spectacle is unforgettable as they can spit hot water and steam 300 feet into the air for between three and 40 minutes at a time.
From March 2018, Steamboat came back to life after three and a half years of sleep.
That year, the geyser erupted a total of 32 times, then 48 times in 2019, and 48 times again in 2020.
Michael Poland, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey (USGS), said: “And just like last year, the shortest and longest time periods between eruptions were around three and 17 days, respectively. “
The sudden explosion of activity in the geyser has made some wonder if this could be a sign of something much more sinister brewing underground.
