Google’s long-awaited improved voice typing is almost ready
Along with the launch of the Pixel 4, Google gave Assistant a much needed boost, promising future upgrades to some features like voice typing. Assistant-assisted dictation arrived on Gboard for Pixel users last year, only to disappear a day later. It looks like Google is set to unveil its latest AI-powered trick again, but unsurprisingly, it will again be limited to specific devices.
This report comes from Mishaal Rahman of XDA Developers, who noticed a updated description for “Assistant voice typing” – a slight name change from last year’s “Enhanced voice typing”. After spotting the setting, he reached out to the Google News Telegram group, which managed to activate the feature after spoofing a Pixel 6 Pro. While it’s cool to finally see it in action, it confirms what some might have feared: another Assistant tool exclusive to Google’s newest hardware.
It all sounds cool, but I’m especially excited about the support for voice-based emoji.
Possible disappointment aside, this revised dictation tool looks really cool. It combines reliable Google text-to-speech with all-new controls to do it all hands-free. Remove, undo, even basic emoji support – it’s all there. You can even move between fields in forms or emails without touching your phone. If you have activated keyword wake-up, you can even say “Hey Google” to activate voice dictation entirely without a single touch.
It’s unclear if this feature will remain a Pixel 6 and 6 Pro exclusive forever, but it’s likely that it uses the Tensor SoC to do a part of it. Google hasn’t dived deep into its new processor since its initial announcement, but one of the few things it has highlighted is improved voice dictation over older Qualcomm chips. We’re going to keep our fingers crossed, this isn’t just limited to brand new smartphones, but we won’t know until October 19.
