The US Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, announces dates for its youth waterfowl hunts at Lake Arkabutla. The hunts take place on January 29 and February 5, 2022 and will take place in a management area near the Arkabutla Dam.
These hunts, organized in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, offer experienced waterfowl hunters the opportunity to teach younger generations of hunters the proper techniques and ethics of the sport.
Lake Arkabutla is now accepting applications as of October 1. A total of 12 hunters, six per hunt, will be selected at random from all applications received. Applications must be submitted and received by 3:00 p.m. on January 7, 2022.
These hunts will be open to young people from 10 to 15 years old. All young hunters must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older. All participants will be responsible for complying with all state and federal age-appropriate waterfowl hunting regulations.
The accompanying adult is encouraged to have a general knowledge of state and federal waterfowl hunting regulations. Adults and accompanying youth are also encouraged to bring all necessary equipment associated with waterfowl hunting, i.e. waders, duck calls and a shotgun with ammunition.

Lakes Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada, the four flood control reservoirs of the Mississippi within the Vicksburg District area of responsibility, were authorized by the flood control law of 1936, which included a plan designed to make in the face of the floods that started in the Yazoo basin. The four reservoirs are used to retain runoff, or excess rainwater, as a flood prevention measure. With about 3.2 million visitors each year, the northern Mississippi lakes also contribute about $ 82 million to the local economy.

The Vicksburg District encompasses an area of 68,000 square miles on parts of the Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that is home to nine major river basins and includes approximately 460 miles of the Mississippi’s main dykes.
