YouTube permanently cancels Rewind after years of everyone hating him

YouTube Rewind – the company’s annual year-end recap of the site’s most popular trends, creators, memes and videos – has been canceled for good, the company confirmed to TubeFilter today.

Instead, YouTube “will refocus our energies on you and the trends that make YouTube [fire emoji] with a different kind of up-to-date experience, ”although the company didn’t say what it would replace Rewind with.

YouTube will also rely on the creators of its platform to fill the void, with a spokesperson saying Tube feed that he “will continue to be inspiring to see the myriad of ways the world’s most creative content producers – our YouTube creators – sum up the end of the year in their video recaps, as YouTube retires its own video Rewind “.

The news of YouTube’s permanent cancellation of Rewind comes as no huge surprise. The company already taken off 2020, citing the difficulties of the year: “2020 was different. And it doesn’t feel right to me to go on like this isn’t the case.

But Rewind had already struggled long before the pandemic. The 2018 video was viciously scanned by the YouTube community (to this day it remains the most hated video ever posted on the platform). The creators argued that the company was turning away from the “real community” – including controversial creators like Logan Paul and PewDiePie – in favor of more user-friendly choices for advertisers.

And the 2019 video attempted to sidestep the controversy entirely by shifting its format from the big-budget YouTubers mashup of years gone by to a more ordinary (and boring) list of clips from the most-watched creators, videos, and trends.

But whether they are well received or broadcast endlessly, Rewind videos have been an integral part of YouTube culture for the past decade. Hopefully whatever YouTube ends up doing to replace its big holiday party will be a little less controversial in the future.
