Daniel Macias, a Yucaipa father of five whose wife, Davy, a nurse, died of complications from COVID-19 late last month, has died after battling the disease himself, according to a GoFundMe account created by family members.

The Macias children are aged 7 and under, including a newborn baby born a week before Davy Macias died.

“There are no words to explain the loss of him and Davy,” Terri Serey, a member of the GoFundMe fundraising team, wrote on the page on Friday, September 10. “Keep the children in your thoughts and prayers. They have won two angels but still have a long way to go.

Daniel Macias, 38, was an educator for 15 years in the Rialto Unified School District, where he was the AVID coordinator and chair of the Jehue Middle School math department, according to district spokeswoman Syeda Jafri. Daniel Macias graduated from Rialto High School, his wife from Eisenhower High School.

He is remembered as a compassionate, caring, fun-loving and generous teacher at Jehue College, but he was also a dedicated family man, ”a statement from RUSD read.

Jafri said staff at Jehue were working with staff at Morris Elementary School, where Daniel Macias’ mother worked before his recent retirement, to raise money for the family.

“On behalf of the Board of Education and the Superintendent, Dr. Avila, we share the grief with his families and the staff at Jehue. It is a difficult time, but Mr. Macias has left a legacy of educational excellence to countless students, ”the district statement read. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the Macias family.”

Daniel and Davy Macias, RN in the Labor and Delivery Department at Kaiser Fontana Medical Center, took their family on vacation to the beach in late July, concluding the trip to an indoor water park in Orange County, the family said. Shortly after, Davy Macias, who was pregnant at the time, was admitted to the emergency room with COVID-19.

Her husband began his battle with the disease a few days later.

A doctor gave birth to Macias’ baby six weeks before her due date. The couple have not had a chance to name the baby girl, who is currently in good health, according to the family.

Davy Macias died eight days after giving birth on August 26. She was 37 years old.
