Former Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh has died from smoke inhalation after being pulled from a fire at a house in Connecticut, forensic scientists have determined.
His death was called an accident, the US office of the ME said on Monday, according to the Hartford Courant.
The 46-year-old entrepreneur died on Friday after being rescued from the blazing New London home nine days earlier.
He was trapped in a storage area during the early morning fire at 500 Pequot Avenue on Nov. 18, police told the newspaper.
Firefighters broke in and pulled an unresponsive Hsieh out of the building, and then he was rushed to Bridgeport hospital, officials said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Hsieh led retail giant Zappos for 20 years and retired as CEO in August. He has also played a central role in the revitalization of downtown Las Vegas, where Zappos is based.
The Harvard graduate grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and sold his first business to Microsoft in 1998 at the age of 24. He then used the profits to start a venture capital firm that invested in a shoe retail site that turned into Zappos, which was sold to Amazon in 2009 for $ 1.2 billion.
His next company, DTP, has acquired a huge plot of underutilized real estate in Las Vegas and has invested $ 350 million in development, small businesses, startups and healthcare.
