NEW DELHI: The Center dispatched a multidisciplinary team to Maharashtra on Monday, after a case of Zika virus was recently reported in its district of Pune.
The expert teams were tasked with monitoring the Zika virus situation and helping the state government to effectively manage cases.
The 3-member team consists of a public health expert from the regional director’s office in Pune; a gynecologist from Lady Hardinge Medical College in Delhi and an entomologist from the National Malaria Research Institute (NIMR), ICMR, the health ministry said in a statement.
They will work closely with the state health department, take stock of the situation on the ground and assess whether the government’s action plan for the management of Zika is being implemented.
The state reported its first mild case of Zika virus infection in a village in Pune on Saturday, said Dr Pradip Awate, head of surveillance for Maharashtra.
The lady who contracted the virus had a mixed infection as she had also tested positive for Chickungunya.
Prior to Maharashtra, Kerala had reported a total of 63 Zika virus infections as of July 31.
Kerala had confirmed its first case on July 8 in a 24-year-old pregnant woman.
Zika is a moderate mosquito-borne disease spread by the bite of the aedes aegypti mosquito in which 80 percent of patients have no symptoms and the remaining 20 percent have moderate flu-like symptoms.
Other typical symptoms include fever, body aches, and conjunctivitis, and pregnant women should be more careful.
The infection can be treated by drinking enough water, resting and taking a single paracetamol tablet.
