Trevor Noah responded to criticism from a French diplomat about the comedian's comments on the France team in the World Cup
After France's victory at the football tournament on July 15 against Croatia, Noah congratulated Africa on his show, so many French national players are of African heritage.
"Yes Yes Africa has won the World Cup! Africa has won the World Cup!" Says the South African comedian.
He continued, "I understand, I understood. They must say that it is the team of France, but look at these guys – you do not linger in the south from France. "
Noah's comments provoked a reaction from the French ambassador to the United States. Noah sent a letter in response.
In the letter, which Noah read aloud to the audience during his broadcast, Araud said of Noah's comments: "Nothing could be less true."
"France does not refer to its citizens on the basis of their race, religion or origin – for us, there is no identity with a hyphen" the letter, before suggesting that Noah's joke about the players "denies their Frenchness."
Araud also pointed out that a lot of players come from Africa, they "were educated in France. They learned to play football in France. "
" This, even jokingly, legitimizes the ideology that claims whiteness as the only definition of being French, "wrote the ambassador.
In response to the severe refutation, Noah defended his comments, stating that his intention was not to "exclude them from their Frenchness, but rather I use them to include them in my Africanness."
"I say I see you, my French brother of African descent, "the comedian said – a feeling that many Africans felt towards the French national team in the final.
The host also argued that it seems that the ambassador's answer suggests that you can only be French or African World Cup Final: France vs Croatia

On social media, people defended the two sides of the argument – with many ranking from Noah's point of view that players can be both African and French.
