The construction of road infrastructure and bridges destroyed by Cyclone Idai at Chimanimani, led by the South African Defense Forces, is progressing steadily, it was announced.

State broadcaster ZBC announced that progress continued to be made at Kopa Growth Point in Chimanimani, with the second batch of building materials from South Africa arriving at the site today.

In an interview, the head of the South African military delegation, Lieutenant Colonel Delnot Njoko, said that the arrival of the equipment would enhance the progress on the site because the target remains, so that the restoration work be completed before the start of the next rainy season.

The intention is to rebuild the roads and bridges before the next rainy season towards the end of the year. South African engineers would build Bailey bridges over rivers, including the Rusitu and Nyahode Rivers.

Cyclone Idai hit Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi in mid-March this year. About 600 people were killed in Zimbabwe and 270,000 were affected.

The hurricane hit much of eastern Zimbabwe. The heaviest rains fell in Chimanimani district. Generalized flash floods claimed the lives of hundreds of people and caused considerable damage. The Nyahonde River has overflowed and flooded many communities. The destruction of many bridges and roads in the eastern part of Chimanimani has isolated many inhabitants.
