Two people reportedly died and four others were reportedly injured, including three seriously, after a shootout at the Charlotte campus of the University of North Carolina on Tuesday.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has announced in a tweet the authorities have a suspect in detention.

"Safe scene, one in detention, no reason to believe that anyone else is involved, CMPD and UNCC are moving room by room on campus to identify students, faculty or staff. other people likely to take refuge on the spot, "said the police.

Campus Police Chief Jeff Baker said the police were on hand quickly enough to find and disarm the suspect in the same room where the shooting took place.

He added that two people were found dead at the scene and three others were hospitalized in critical condition, while the fourth person had suffered less serious injuries.

It was not immediately known whether the victims were students, educators or staff members.

The campus has been locked out for much of Tuesday afternoon and into the evening.

Previously, tweets from the campus emergency management office informed People at "Run, Hide, Fight.Safe Up Right Now" because "law enforcement is scanning individual buildings on campus."

The shots were fired near the Kennedy building of the school.

Student Laura Olmos told the WFAE member station: "I received a call telling me not to come back to campus because I was going back for dinner with my friends. we are one of these schools. It's so crazy. "

Ari Seal, a graduate student, said that he was in the gym when the alarm went off. The lights were off and the students were invited to snuggle up in the center of the gym.
