2 young Cass County residents die as active COVID-19 cases continue to decline in North Dakota

Statewide, active cases have fallen 27% since reaching a pandemic high of 10,107 on Friday, November 13, the Department of Health reported.

Over the past week, each of North Dakota’s four largest counties has reported a drop in active cases. Grand Forks County’s active cases fell 42.6% in the past seven days to 618. Ward County also reported an equally large drop in active cases over the past week, with a drop in 35.5% to 756.

Cass County of Fargo and Burleigh County of Bismarck have reported a decrease in active cases of about 20% over the past week. The two counties currently run the state in active cases, with Cass County reporting 1,367 and Burleigh County a total of 1,161 on Saturday.

Ten more counties in North Dakota reported triple-digit active cases on Saturday. Griggs County’s 282 active cases per 10,000 population have passed the state.

The department also reported 750 new cases of the virus in North Dakota, led by three of the state’s largest counties. Cass County led the group with 135 new cases, while Burleigh County added 92 new cases. Minot’s Ward County has reported 77 new cases.

Rolette County has a total of 54 new cases and Stark County has reported 44 new cases. Barnes County and Grand Forks County have reported 39 and 38 new cases, respectively.

Cavalier, Foster, Morton, Pembina, Richland, Sioux, Stutsman, Walsh, Wells and Williams counties have reported between 10 and 20 new cases. Adams, Benson, Billings, Bottineau, Bowman, Burke, Dickey, Divide, Dunn, Emmons, Golden Valley, Griggs, Hettinger, Kidder, LaMoure, McHenry, McLean, Mercer, Mountrail, Nelson, Pierce, Ramsey, Ransom, Renville, Sargent , Steele, Towner and Traill counties each added nine or fewer new cases.

The new cases come from 7,659 tests, marking a daily positivity rate of 10.7%.

Forty-four positive cases reported yesterday were inconclusive, the ministry noted. The cases were primarily from Ward and Rolette counties, one each of Bottineau and Pierce counties. These people have been removed from the data and will be tested again.

The state also announced 13 new deaths of individuals carrying the virus. The deceased, seven men and six women, were from Benson, Cass, Foster, Grand Forks, LaMoure, McIntosh, McLean, Walsh and Ward counties.

Notably, the two deceased Cass County residents were in their 40s and 50s. Four of those who died were in the 1960s. Two Grand Forks women in their 70s and 80s and five residents in their 90s were among those who died.

The deaths brought the state’s COVID-19 death toll to 915 people. 674 of the deaths cite the virus as the main cause of death, while 241 cite it as a secondary cause or are pending death. Just over 1% of North Dakotans who became infected with the virus have died.

The ministry reported 1,564 new recoveries of COVID-19. The state recovery rate is 89.4%.

Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 12,999,664 cases of COVID-19 and 263,956 deaths as of Saturday afternoon.
