Michigan discovered 99 new school-associated COVID-19 outbreaks last week, infecting at least 412 students and staff.
Combined with the 129 ongoing outbreaks reported in previous Michigan Department of Health and Human Services weekly reports, the state is aware of 228 active outbreaks in schools, resulting in the infection of at least 1,730 students and Staff.
The state’s health department updates its online report on school outbreaks every week, most often on Mondays. The latest report was released on Monday September 20, with data available for the MDHHS as of Thursday September 16.
Since the return of students in recent weeks, schools have reported a significant increase in epidemics and have affected students and staff. Students under 12 are not eligible for a vaccine and not all schools require masks.

New outbreaks have been identified in 36 counties. The largest new outbreaks involved 31 students and staff at Lakeview High School in Calhoun County, 14 students at James T. Jones Elementary School in Delta County, and 11 students and staff at Morenci Middle School in Lenawee County.
While K-12 schools make up the majority of outbreaks, college outbreaks are typically responsible for the majority of people affected by the outbreak. The University of Michigan has the largest ongoing outbreak, with 446 students and staff affected.
Ongoing outbreaks, which include previously identified clusters, but which have had at least one additional case in the past 28 days, have been identified in 39 counties.

A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a location and time link indicating shared exposure outside of a household.
Outbreak data for K-12 schools includes only cases in which the student or staff were infected at school or during a school-related function. Those who caught the virus outside of school are not included.
Overall, COVID-19 outbreaks in Michigan have jumped 31% over the past week, topping the peak of K-12 clusters. Long-term care facilities, child / youth care programs, and manufacturing / construction sites are other primary settings for known epidemics.
The state includes this warning with the data: “This information does not provide a complete picture of school-related outbreaks in Michigan, and the absence of identified outbreaks at an educational institution does not provide evidence in any way. that, in fact, this school is not experiencing an epidemic. “
