A pastor in Jacksonville, Florida, encourages his congregation to get vaccinated after a COVID-19 outbreak has ravaged his church.

Six unvaccinated members died from COVID-19 within the ten days, Senior Pastor George Davis of Impact Church told local news outlet News4Jax.

“In the past 10 days, we have had six members of our church who died of COVID. Four of them were under 35. All were healthy and the only thing they had in common was that ‘they weren’t vaccinated,’ Davis said.

Another 15-20 church members have been hospitalized with the virus, while others have tested positive but have not been hospitalized, including a few vaccinated members.

The church requires worshipers to wear masks during the service, according to News4Jax. Davis said they held a vaccination event in March with 800 people getting vaccinated. After the last outbreak, the church holds another vaccination event and urges everyone to get vaccinated.

Florida has become the epicenter of the most recent wave of COVID-19 in the United States. The state has broken its own record for new daily COVID-19 cases three times in the past week, as hospitalizations also rise. Childhood infections are also on the rise in Florida, as well as Texas, including among children too young to get vaccinated.

About 49% of Florida residents are fully vaccinated, on par with the national rate of 50%, according to the CDC.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican who has resisted mask warrants and other coronavirus restrictions, fought with the White House this week after President Joe Biden accused him of not do enough to control the epidemic.
