About 72,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus last week in the United States, according to a report from American Academy of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital Association.

The organizations collected data from 49 states, New York City, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

The 72,000 cases last week are up from the 39,000 cases of COVID-19 reported in children the week before.

“A smaller subset of states reported hospitalizations and mortality by age; available data indicates that hospitalizations and deaths associated with COVID-19 are rare among children, ”the report said.

The death rate among children with COVID-19 was 0 to 0.26% in the states that provided the figures, with seven states not recording any child deaths.

Throughout the pandemic through July 29, nearly 4.2 million children have tested positive for the coronavirus.

In addition to reporting the numbers, the report says more needs to be done to investigate the long-term impact of COVID-19 on children.

“At this time, it appears that serious illnesses from COVID-19 are rare in children.
