ROCKPORT, Texas (WPVI) –
A family in Rockport, Texas is looking for answers after their son died suddenly on Sunday.
According to relatives of KTRK-TV, Martin Campbell, 8 years old, had flu-like symptoms and died a few hours later. Now, officials are waiting for test results to determine exactly the cause of his death.
"One would think that he was an adult," said his mother, Jasmine Solis. "He knew more than me, more than any of us."
"He had a lot to say," said Aunt Jessica Solis. "He wanted to say it and he wanted you to sit there and listen."
His family called him Chucky – an 8-year-old boy with bright, talkative and brave eyes.
"He can tell you a story as if nobody were doing it, and he would talk and talk and talk again," Jasmine said.
So when Chucky did not speak, family members knew something was wrong.
"He had a squeaky and squeaky voice, and it's not here and it's what I miss," Jessica said.
Jasmine said Martin was suffering from typical flu symptoms Sunday night. Their suspicions were confirmed when they took him to the emergency that day.
"It was like a normal fever," said Jasmine.
After being diagnosed with the flu and given medicine to Martin, they left the hospital, but a few hours later, their world collapsed.
"It was at this point that we noticed that he was turning purple," said Jasmine.
Jasmine said her boyfriend had tried to revive her son while she was calling 911.
"Before help arrived, it was already too late," Jasmine said.
Martin was taken to a Portland hospital where his mother reported having suffered a cardiac arrest.
"When I arrived, they finally told me that he was gone," Jasmine said.
Martin's family is now wondering what's wrong.
"We did not know what to do," Jessica said. "I do not understand why, he's so small, he's so bubbly and he still had a lot."
Jasmine said she received considerable support from the community. Martin's classmates created support cards for their friend.
"My poor baby thought that he never had friends, because everyone had chosen him because he was different," Jasmine said.
"It surprises me, it's true," Jessica said. "He had just seen the number of people who had gathered for him."
Health officials said that an autopsy was over and that they are waiting for the test results to find out if the flu actually caused Martin's death. Meanwhile, his family meets to plan funeral arrangements.
