"Breakthrough": The True Story of John Smith's Miraculous Survival

"Breakthrough" tells the true story of one of the most miraculous recoveries of all time.

John Smith was only 14 when he fell into an icy lake in Missouri in 2015. After being rescued from the icy waters, John was rushed to a local hospital where he was was pronounced dead, without pulse for nearly 45 minutes.

But then something remarkable happened: he woke up.

The incredible story is told again, at the Hollywood, in "Breakthrough", with Chrissy Metz and Josh Lucas.

Megan Alexander of Inside Edition spoke to real John, who still can not believe that he is alive. "I should be dead," he says.

His initial sensation falling through the ice was "cold" and "shock".

"My life broke out in front of my eyes," he said. "My family, my friends, realizing:" That's it. "

SSM Health's doctor, Kent Sutterer, played by Sam Trammell in the film, simply assumed that John would not arrive there when he arrived at the hospital.

"The fact that he's been gone for so long," said Sutterer, "in my mind he would not come back."

He was on his knees and announced the news to John's mother, Joyce Smith: his son, he said, was dead.

But that did not stop Joyce, a fervent Christian who prayed and prayed for her son's life.

And then his heart started beating again.

"It was as if the Holy Spirit had gone through the door and brought up John's heart," said Sutterer.

The most miraculous of all? He was totally normal and had no brain injury.

"Breakthrough" opens in theaters on April 17 and is based on Joyce's book, "The Impossible".
