In an unexpected turn of events, a law student’s trip to the grocery store ended with him and a friend getting vaccinated against the COVID-19 vaccine.
Law student David MacMillan and his friend were at a Giant Food supermarket in Washington DC shopping for groceries when a pharmacist approached them to ask if they were interested in getting the shot. Taken by surprise, he agreed and said it was “a great way to start 2021”.
MacMillan posted a video on TikTok that shows him receiving the vaccine, and the clip has since been shared widely on the platform. In the clip, he explained that several first responders who were due to receive the Moderna vaccine had missed their appointments. Since the vaccine could not be stored at room temperature for more than a few hours, it would have to be discarded, which is why staff offered it to them.
“She turned to us and said, ‘Hey, I have two doses of the vaccine and I’m going to have to throw them away if I don’t give them to someone. We close in 10 minutes. Do you want the Moderna vaccine? MacMillan said according to a NY Post report.
Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccines should be transported and stored at minus 70 and minus 20 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that states first provide immunizations to first responders, essential workers, and populations at risk, including the elderly in nursing homes.
“It’s important that when there’s so much disinformation swirling around, that people can see that it’s a good thing, it’s a positive thing. We should be excited to be able to deal with the pandemic, ”MacMillan told NBC News.
Speaking of the vaccine, he said he had a mild reaction to the vaccine – a headache – but felt overall well. He also said the CDC was checking in with him every day via text message to monitor for symptoms.
