Delta Air Lines will not allow travelers to airports serving the Washington metro area to check for firearms on flights prior to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, CEO Ed Bastian told CNBC on Thursday.
The new policy, which begins this weekend and continues next week, comes after last week’s deadly pro-Trump riot on the U.S. Capitol and a wave of politically motivated unrest on flights and at airports. The police authorized to carry firearms will be exempted.
“We are all on high alert based on the events of the past two weeks in Washington,” Bastian said in an interview on “Squawk Box”.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday it would adopt a zero tolerance policy for travelers who are unruly or who interfere with flight crew duties, fining them up to $ 35,000.
Airlines, airports and hotels are stepping up security ahead of Wednesday’s inauguration. Several airports have said they will add more police officers, while airlines are increasing staff and reserving overnight crews at airport hotels. American Airlines announced Wednesday night that it would suspend alcohol sales for DC flights.
