ANN ARBOR, MI – Coronavirus cases at the University of Michigan now account for 34% of cases in Washtenaw County, according to the university’s COVID-19 dashboard.
The university has identified 277 cases of COVID-19 for the week of January 24, according to the dashboard. On January 27, the Washtenaw County Health Department recommended that all UM students stay in their campus-area residences to reduce the spread of COVID-19, including the more easily transmitted B.1.1.7 . variant.

The scorecard does not identify if the cases are linked to the variant, and MU spokesperson Rick Fitzgerald previously said there were no plans to make the change.
UM identified 11 off-campus group residences with positive cases or in-person gatherings when recommending to stay put, according to the dashboard. These residences are quarantined house-wide and contextual testing is underway for those in quarantine to be tested on the fifth day of their 14-day quarantine period, according to the dashboard.
The recommendation to stay in place ends at 11:59 p.m. on February 7, but stricter actions may be needed if the outbreak continues to grow and more clusters of variants are identified, Ministry of Justice officials said. Health.
As of January 1, the university has identified 738 positive cases for COVID-19 and administered 50,686 COVID-19 tests. More than half of those cases – 438 – were recorded in the past 14 days, according to data from the Dashboard.
There are currently seven individuals in quarantine, which means they have potentially been exposed or are awaiting test results. No student is isolated, according to the dashboard.
