After winter storm Uri wreaked havoc in the state of Texas, Santa Barbara County Animal Services (SBCAS) answered the call for help from animal shelters directly affected by freezing temperatures, ice and the snow. With their owners stranded without power and water, thousands of Texas animals entered shelters in the aftermath of the storm. Due to this rapid influx of animals into the shelters, dogs and cats that were already there before the storm are now at risk of being euthanized due to lack of space and depleted resources. Through extensive collaboration from animal organizations, a goal has been set to find safe transportation for 1,000 or more animals across state borders to free up critical space in exhausted Texas shelters.
Making the long trip from El Paso, 22 of these lucky dogs will arrive in Santa Barbara on the evening of Saturday, March 6, 2021. The dogs selected for the trip range from 4 to 70 pounds and are healthy and sociable. More importantly, the priority was to transfer dogs that really do not have a home or are at risk of being euthanized. According to SBCAS Director Angela Yates, “As a municipal shelter, it is unusual for us to transfer animals from other jurisdictions, but in times of disaster and crisis, our network of animal shelters work together to save so many. animals as possible. We are so grateful to be able to offer these 22 dogs a new and loving life in Santa Barbara! “
This transport is made possible thanks to SBCAS ‘partnership with CARE4Paws, Shadow’s Fund and the Santa Barbara Animal Care Foundation who have mobilized their support and resources to help them. El Paso Animal Services will transport the dogs to the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson who has graciously offered to serve as a transportation hub to give these winter canine refugees a day of rest. SBCAS volunteers will make the grueling 18 hour round trip to the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, Arizona, where the 22 dogs will be loaded and on their way to a new life in our Santa Barbara community.

A team of staff and volunteers will greet the transport team upon arrival at the Santa Barbara Shelter, 5473 Overpass Road at approximately 7:00 p.m. On Saturday evening the dogs will be rotated around our play areas to ensure they are ‘they will have the opportunity to stretch. their legs and acclimatize to their new surroundings. All dogs will receive a veterinary examination before being placed for adoption. Many Texas dogs will be immediately available and a special adoption event is scheduled for March 9, 2021: Texas Tuesday!
