Houston woman receives second dose of COVID-19 vaccine after tweeting Mayor Sylvester Turner

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – As more Houstonians begin receiving their second dose of COVID-19 vaccine, the date on the immunization card for the second dose may not be when they receive it.

Currently, thousands of people receive their COVID-19 vaccine every day at various sites in Houston. It’s a snap that Kimberly Mannino told ABC13 she was thrilled to get it.

“I felt like I won the lottery,” Mannino recalls.

Mannino, who is in the second eligible group, said it took three months to get the first dose. She received the first dose last month at Delmar Stadium, where she received a card with a second dose date. But when she contacted the Houston health department, she was told there was no appointment.

“I felt like it was a slap in the face because I followed every rule,” Mannino recalls. “Other than work, because I’m an essential worker, and the grocery store, I haven’t left my house.”

Feeling frustrated, Mannino took to social media and tweeted Mayor Sylvester Turner to help him resolve the situation. Next thing she knew, she got a call and an appointment for a second dose this week.

“I guess I don’t understand all this bureaucracy if it’s the exact same vaccine,” Mannino said.

The health department said the date of the second dose on the card may not be the date of the vaccine. Instead of 21 or 28 days later, it could be 42. The CDC has said that as long as you get a second dose within 42 days, the vaccine is still working.

The city of Houston has said it will reach more than 48 hours before your scheduled appointment for your second dose. A spokesperson said that even with eligibility expanded to all adults in Texas, there are enough photos available for those who need them – it might not be as fast as you want it to be.
