WAILUKU – A homeless man who was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend last week will be allowed to travel to New York to live with his parents if he is released on bail.
Peter Reznik, 35, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to two counts of assault and second degree abuse.
According to a statement filed in court in support of the charges, he allegedly kicked the woman in the coastal region on the night of September 27 while they were in a brush area in Block 200. from Kanaloa Avenue to Kahului. The next night, Reznik and the woman had an argument about their relationship when she tried to walk away and he grabbed her neck with both hands and said: “Stop it, devil”, according to the statement.
Reznik was arrested on the morning of September 29 when he and the woman went to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room for treatment, police said.
During Reznik’s arraignment on Thursday in 2nd Circuit Court, defense attorney Anthony Ranken said Reznik’s parents were prepared to post $ 4,000 bail for him and that he had agreed to ‘go live with them.
Ranken said he would pick up Reznik from the Maui Community Correctional Center and take him straight to the airport. Reznik has a psychological disorder, Ranken said.
“He’s been homeless here,” Ranken said. “It would be much better if he was with his parents. “
The prosecution opposed Reznik’s request for leave to leave, with Deputy Prosecutor Johann Smith saying the accused is charged with a crime of violence against a 63-year-old woman.
Granting the defense’s request, Judge Kelsey Kawano said his main concern was the victim’s safety if Reznik posted a bond and returned to the campsite.
Reznik was ordered to have no contact with the woman and to stay away from the scene of the alleged assaults.
