New Horizons photos shed more light on the Kuiper Belt

The photographs revealed some small craters on Charon – by default, this indicates a lack of small impactors. The researchers believe, based on the analysis of these craters, that most objects in the Kuiper belt have a diameter of between 300 and 1 mile, which is considered small in this case.

While New Horizons returns images of the MU69 object, this discovery by scientists led by the Southwest Research Institute provides even more information on the composition of the belt. For starters, this indicates that the objects in the Kuiper Belt are different from those in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It could also give scientists a new insight into how the solar system might have come into being, although no concrete conclusions have yet been drawn.
