A deadly mushroom is spreading rapidly in Chicago and suburban health facilities.
The Candida auris fungus primarily affects people with multiple underlying conditions. Health officials in Illinois reported 154 cases just after New York. Of these, 95 are located in Chicago, 63 in the suburbs and three in the downtown core.
The fungus is often resistant to drug treatment.
The disease arrived in Illinois in 2016 after its discovery in Japan in 2009, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Dr. Max Brito is Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Illinois at the Chicago College of Medicine.
"It's a combination of factors that makes you more likely to have such a bug," Brito told the Tribune. "It's a concern for people with chronic illness or weakened immune systems."
Officials warn people who visit health facilities to wash their hands with soap after they have been in contact with a patient or other medical device.
