It was the bones and skull of his mother, Bonnie Haim, who had disappeared since January 1993 and whose body had not been found.
Prosecutors said the investigation led the authorities to arrest her husband, Michael Haim, and to charge her with second-degree murder.
"The truth has always been there, buried in their court," Attorney General Alan Mizrahi said in an opening statement on Tuesday.
Michael and Bonnie Haim had had marital problems and he has long been one of the main suspects in the case, said his defense attorney Janis Warren in his opening remarks.
But he has maintained his innocence since his disappearance. In an interview with WJXT, a member of CNN, shortly after Bonnie Haim's disappearance in 1993, Michael Haim said that she had left their home the night of January 6, as a result of a couple problem .
Warren said prosecutors did not have enough evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
"We agree that she's dead.We agree that it's her body in the backyard. But they have to prove to you that it's okay." he did it, "she said. "When you listen to the testimonies, ladies and gentlemen, and when you are done, you will find that the lack of evidence in this case far outweighs the evidence they have brought you."
After the disappearance of his mother, he told a child protection worker at the time: "Dad hurt mom," reported WJXT.
Statements of commencement of the trial
The remains of Bonnie Haim were found under a shower pad in the home's garden, said Mizrahi. A .22 caliber shell was also found close to the body, he said, and Michael Haim had a .22 caliber rifle.
Although a medical examiner could not determine with certainty how she had been killed, Mizrahi claimed that Michael Haim had shot her, then buried there in 1993.
"The actions of the accused before the murder and after the murder demonstrate his depraved indifference to Bonnie Haim's life," he said.
The investigators searched the property several times in the years following his disappearance, but had only found his remains after the discovery of Fraser two decades later.
Warren, Haim's lawyer, said Tuesday that prosecutors would not be able to prove that he had killed her and had filed her body there the night of her disappearance.
"The only thing that matters is: can they prove that he killed her, and can they prove that he put the body in the garden? There is no proof of that, "she added.
