ORLANDO, Fla. – A father of two from Orlando, who contracted a flesh-eating bacterium, died, according to his family.

David Ireland, 50, who worked at Universal Orlando, was recently diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis caused by the group A Streptococcus bacteria.

His mother, Lois Ireland, told News 6 that her son had died after fighting the bacteria.

The brother of Ireland said the doctors had removed more than 25% of the skin from Ireland.

His family said that Ireland had started to have flu-like symptoms about a week ago when doctors admitted it to an emergency room in Orlando.

"He thought he had the flu, in fact, he called one of those doctors and he was told that he had the flu," Lois Ireland said.

She said that after the diagnosis and the administration of antibiotics, he had been operated on.

"Her leg has no skin at all, no fat, it is halfway up the back," she said.

It is not known how David Ireland contracted the bacteria, but doctors suspect that it had entered his blood and started to attack his muscles.

"He had a small cut, he does not know how he got it and then, you know, it's strep A," Lois Ireland said.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help the family pay for medical expenses.

David Ireland leaves behind his wife and two daughters aged 7 and 4.
