The strange illness that took the lives of two US residents on holiday in Fiji remains unknown, but new details reveal some of the symptoms they experienced before rushing to a doctor and dying.
Michelle and David Paul, who had been in Fiji for only two days before becoming seriously ill, are now under investigation by health officials from the Fiji Department of Health, the World Health Organization Health and CDC. The pair died a few days apart after the treatments failed to rid them of their symptoms.
As ABC News reports that Michelle Paul contacted her parents in Nevada shortly after she arrived in Fiji with her husband, to let them know that their couple had found something.
"We are both going to the doctor now," she would have sent a message. "We have been vomiting for 8 hours. Dave has diarrhea. My hands are numb. We will send a text message when we can.
Eventually, the symptoms became severe enough that both men decided to seek treatment at a local clinic.
"We just got back from the clinic. They gave us fluids and anti-nausea drops, "said Michelle Paul in an update to her parents. "They gave us electrolyte packs and anti-nausea pills. We still do not feel 100%. Go to rest in our room.
On May 25, three days after arriving in the country, Michelle Paul passed away. Her husband died two days later and the illness that ended their lives remains unknown.
The Fiji Ministry of Health said "the flu was excluded", while noting that there does not seem to be an immediate risk to the health of the general public. Nevertheless, the speed with which the disease claimed the lives of two apparently healthy adults is worrying.
The medical staff who treated the couple was quarantined but does not seem to be ill, suggesting that anything that killed the couple is not particularly contagious. Nevertheless, the situation remains rather frightening as health officials work to determine the cause of the tragedy.
