PHOENIX (FOX 10) – In the wake of this year's National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, a woman from the Valley talks about her struggle and her victory over anorexia.
Coaching has not always been a health and fitness issue for Tanis Studt.
"I had 5" and "less than 100 pounds," said Tanis Studt.
At the age of 19, Tanis started fighting a eating disorder. The exercise for pleasure became an obsession that made him lose nearly 20 pounds.
"Once the exercise has reached a plateau, I started limiting my diet, getting rid of these foods or eating too much and exercising obsessively", Tanis explained. "I would just look in the mirror and think that I was fat, even though I was losing weight like crazy."
The battle continued for seven years until she began training with Ryan Read, owner of Thrive Specialized Training.
His attitude and approach have changed dramatically because of Read's techniques.
"I almost told him that I could gain weight, no more than 20 pounds, that people would not look at you strangely, it's a mental disorder," Ryan Read said.
Read waited to develop a relationship of trust before pushing Tanis physically and mentally. He does the same thing for dozens of other women who suffer like her.
"Being healthy, going to the gym, being active, eating when you're hungry, not being afraid to look at yourself, seeing a curve, and being grateful for what you've worked hard for that," says Read.
Regular exercises and a meal plan also provided by Read helped Tanis get on the right track. Her weight is up, she has taken more than 20 pounds in just six months of workout. His confidence is also rising.
"I'm not depressed, I do not worry all the time, I'm happier, I'm more free, I can lead a life without counting calories, it's much more balanced," explains Tanis.
Tanis says she would not have found this balance without Read and credits her for saving her life.
