The social grants distribution agency Sbada apologized to the nation for a crisis that has led some grant recipients to not have access to their money since the beginning of this week.
Abraham Mahlangu, Acting Managing Director of Sbada Social Development Portfolio Committee that affected beneficiaries could not receive their grants due to a problem in the system that had taken a pressure because of the high number of people who had registered with the post office.
"This has not been taken lightly by us, we are not undermining our vulnerable.We should show that we are a caring government.That is why we apologize to the nation, "he said.
Abraham said that the South African Post counted about 233,000 accounts in May and had climbed to more than 930,000 since the start of card trading and opening of new Sbada cards. This situation and the many attempts by beneficiaries to access subsidies had contributed to the tension of the system that had led to the expiration of the deadline.
He said that technical problems were experienced when the payment cycle was opened around midnight on June 30. "We also realized that there was another mistake that caused the expiration of the deadline: it was the line that links the integrated subsidy payment system of the SA Post Office." This was also strangled by huge volumes, "said Mahlangu.
