National Police Commissioner General Khehla John Sitole congratulated the police for tracking down the three alleged killers of Constable Motlalentoa Mahlatsi, while urging communities to report the criminals.
Mahlatsi was killed earlier this week. The police spokesman, Colonel Brenda Muridili, said that Sitole had ordered the provincial leadership to activate a 72-hour reaction plan "as an offensive approach to make sure the police do not do not rest until the alleged culprits are behind bars. " She explained that a multidisciplinary team from Gauteng, composed of seasoned investigators, tactical response and follow-up teams, conducted an intelligence-led operation in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, and that it was the first time that a team of experienced investigators and tactical response teams. she arrested three suspects in the early morning [Thursday]. Muridili said the police had recovered two vehicles, two firearms – including an AK-47 badault rifle – and ammunition.
The first two suspects were arrested in Katlehong, one of them being linked to the murder of another police officer last April.
"This suspect was wanted for four more murders reported to Primrose in 2017 and 2018".
The third suspect was arrested at eMbalenhle in Mpumalanga, with two pistols and a "bullet bullet" VW Polo was also found.
Muridili stated that General Sitole congratulated the teams for "their tireless efforts to track down the alleged killers."
"The police are part of our communities, [at the] first line of security and safety in our country I ask you, as a community, to oppose the killings of the police and say "do not catch our policemen," said Sitole.
"We have to get our street back", he added.
